After Decades of Motion Sickness, Change Came After Just Two Hours of EFT Practice
When a Long-Standing Burden Unexpectedly Disappeared
Some problems follow a person for so many years that they come to believe they will have to live with them for life. For Ms. Vu Thi An – a lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education – motion sickness was such an experience.
According to her account, her motion sickness had been present since childhood. The level of sensitivity was so strong that not only when sitting in a car, but even standing near moving cars on the road could trigger feelings of nausea and discomfort.
"All my family members and friends know that I am very afraid of and cannot ride in, or even go near, cars, because I have suffered from motion sickness since I was a child. Many times, I felt like vomiting even when I just went near moving cars on the road..."
What is remarkable is that after participating in an EFT practice session during the course, she reported that her feelings of fear and nausea reduced very quickly.
"After just the first therapy round, my feelings of fear and nausea decreased from 10 down to 1. By the end of the second therapy round, those feelings had completely disappeared..."
From then until now, according to her account, long-distance car travel is no longer the nightmare it once was.
What actually creates the feeling of motion sickness?
Usually, when mentioning motion sickness, many people immediately think of the vestibular system or issues related to the body's balance ability.
That is entirely correct.
However, modern neuroscience research also shows that human experience is not only created by current physical signals but is also greatly influenced by memory, emotion, learning, and pre-programmed responses in the brain. A person who has repeatedly felt nauseous in cars may gradually form an unconscious association:
Car → Discomfort → Anxiety → Nausea.
Over time, this response can become so strong that merely seeing a car or thinking about riding in one can trigger a cascade of similar physiological responses.
In other words, in some cases, the experience of motion sickness may not only be about the car itself, but also about how the nervous system has learned to respond to that car.
What does EFT target?
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a method that combines focused attention on an issue with a sequence of gentle stimulation on specific points of the body. Practitioners of EFT believe that when negative emotions are released, the body can return to a more natural state of balance. From a neuroscience perspective, EFT can be understood as a process that helps interrupt previously established automatic emotional response loops. When the level of fear decreases, the brain no longer strongly activates defensive responses.
When the defensive response decreases, physical symptoms may also change accordingly.
This is a principle that appears in many different modern psychotherapeutic approaches.
Not every change begins with medication
For decades, modern medicine has achieved enormous accomplishments. However, a growing body of research shows that mind and body do not operate separately. Emotion can affect the immune system. Belief can affect physiology. Prolonged stress can affect the autonomic nervous system. Emotional memory can generate very real physical responses.
This does not mean that every illness originates in the mind. But neither does it mean that changes arising from the mind are less real than those arising from medication. The experiences of thousands of people around the world have shown that when emotional knots are untangled, the body can sometimes show very surprising changes.
The value of real experience
Science is a powerful tool for understanding the world. However, the history of science also shows that many phenomena were observed and effectively applied in practice long before their mechanisms were fully explained.
Humans typically experience life first, and then seek to explain it later. Therefore, stories like that of Ms. Vu Thi An do not necessarily need to be seen as a debate between experience and science. Instead, they can be viewed as vivid demonstrations of the inherent human capacity for adaptation, change, and healing.
Each case is a unique journey. But sometimes, a single real experience can open up an entirely new perspective on the limits we once thought were insurmountable.
"If you haven't experienced or witnessed it directly, it's hard to believe that such a change could happen." – Ms. Vu Thi An.
