“I No Longer Have Pain from Spinal Bone Spurs or a Herniated Disc — and I Don’t Need to Wear a Support Belt Anymore”
Nguyễn Văn Bình shares his experience after attending the New Life Source Program.
Mr. Nguyen Van Binh, a military officer in Bien Hoa, Dong Nai, was a student in the "Igniting a New Vitality" course guided by Therapeutic Hypnosis Expert Nguyen Manh Quan. During the class itself, Mr. Binh was guided by Teacher Quan to practice self-therapy methods as a demonstration for other students to observe and practice along.
Before attending the course, Mr. Binh had lived for 5 years with double bone spurs (vertebral osteophytes) and a herniated disc. The prolonged pain caused him to seek treatment in many places, regularly undergo hospital treatment, use painkillers, and wear a spinal support belt day and night. At one point, when examined at Viet Duc Hospital, he was advised that the remaining option was surgery, but the success rate made him very worried.
He once thought he would have to "live with it," accepting the pain, the medication, and the spinal belt as part of his life.
Five years of spinal pain and the fear of surgery
Spinal pain is not just a feeling of pain in the back. For someone suffering prolonged pain, every action – bending down, sitting down, standing up, turning, or walking – can become a challenge. When pain persists for many years, the body easily falls into a state of tension, fear of movement, loss of confidence, and constant anticipation of the pain returning.
Mr. Binh shared that throughout 5 years, he sought treatment everywhere but did not achieve the desired results. He regularly underwent treatment, took painkillers, and wore a belt to protect his spine. What worried him most was the possibility of surgery, while the outcome of surgery was not absolutely certain.
A herniated disc can cause back pain, radiating leg pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or sciatica, depending on the location and degree of nerve root involvement. For cases with limb weakness, saddle anesthesia, bowel or bladder dysfunction, rapidly increasing pain, or post-traumatic pain, patients need timely specialist evaluation.
The moment of change right in the classroom
What moved Mr. Binh most occurred right in the "Igniting a New Vitality" classroom. When Expert Nguyen Manh Quan treated him as a demonstration for everyone to practice along, he perceived a very rapid change.
In the first therapy round, after only about 8 minutes, his pain sensation decreased by about 50%. This was something that surprised him immensely. After the second therapy round, he shared that the pain he had suffered for years almost completely disappeared. He was immediately able to bend down, sit down, and move normally as in the days before he had pain.
For someone who had endured pain for many years, that moment was not just pain reduction. It was the feeling of regaining bodily freedom. It was the joy when a movement that had been very difficult suddenly became easy. That is also why he kept repeating the phrase: "This is truly miraculous!"
When pain perception changes
Pain is a real experience, but it does not depend only on tissue damage. The brain and nervous system continuously process pain signals based on many factors: degree of damage, muscle tension, stress, sleep, emotion, pain memory, fear of movement, attention, and feeling of safety.
In a tense state, the body easily becomes tight, breathing shallow, the nervous system vigilant, and pain sensation may be more intense. When the body is guided into deep relaxation, focus, feeling safer, and receiving positive therapeutic suggestions, some people may perceive reduced pain, a lighter body, and easier movement.
NCCIH, part of the NIH, states that hypnosis has been studied in contexts such as pain, pre-procedure anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, PTSD, and smoking cessation; for pain, there is growing evidence that hypnosis may support the management of certain pain conditions, though effectiveness varies by individual and pain type. Hypnotherapy and self-therapy in the classroom
In the course, students do not only watch the Teacher demonstrate. Students are also guided on how to observe their bodies, practice relaxation, receive positive suggestions, use mind-body methods, and learn to support themselves within safe limits.
Therapeutic hypnosis is not loss of control. It is a state of deep focus, relaxation, and increased responsiveness to positive suggestions when the participant voluntarily cooperates. When practiced correctly, this state can help learners reduce stress, calm the body, change how they attend to pain, and increase their sense of agency over their health.
Relaxation techniques such as self-hypnosis, guided imagery, breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation can help the body produce the relaxation response, typically accompanied by slower breathing, calmer heart rate, and reduced stress. From a spinal support belt to a feeling of freedom
Before the course, Mr. Binh had to wear a spinal support belt day and night. The belt was both a support tool and a symbol of dependence on illness. When the pain decreased and his body could bend, sit, and move more normally, the joy was not only in "hurting less" but also in the feeling of returning to normal life.
He shared that at the time of writing, his health had returned to normal stability. For him and his family, improving his spinal pain condition was one of the greatest joys in life.
When a chronic pain patient improves, the whole family feels lighter. The patient becomes less dependent, more confident in daily activities, mentally brighter, and family members become less worried. That is the great value of a mind-body change.
Excerpt from Mr. Nguyen Van Binh's reflection
"This is truly miraculous! I have repeated this phrase many times..."
"For 5 years now, I have suffered from double bone spurs and a herniated disc. I sought treatment everywhere but did not recover..."
"I accepted that I would have to live with it and regularly undergo hospital treatment and take painkillers."
"In the first therapy round, after only about 8 minutes, my pain sensation had already decreased by about 50%."
"Immediately after finishing the second therapy round, all the pain I had suffered for so many years completely disappeared."
"I was immediately able to bend and sit down completely normally as in the days before I ever had the condition."
"Being able to participate in this special seminar is truly a very fortunate thing for me."
Therapy demonstration video for Mr. Binh in class
The video captures the process of Expert Nguyen Manh Quan guiding Mr. Binh to practice self-therapy methods during the "Igniting a New Vitality" class in Ho Chi Minh City.
This is one of the visual demonstrations of how students are guided to experience the method, perceive changes in their own bodies, and understand that mind-body health can be supported through relaxation techniques, self-hypnosis, positive suggestion, and correct practice.
Common concerns of students in the "Igniting a New Vitality" course
Many students join the course with issues such as insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression, neck and shoulder pain, back pain, herniated disc, spinal degeneration, sciatica, stomach pain, colon issues, blood pressure problems, diabetes, or prolonged mind-body issues.
The course aims to help students understand their bodies, understand stress, understand emotions, and learn self-care methods such as self-hypnosis, EFT, deep relaxation, breath regulation, positive suggestion, and emotional release. These methods may support learners in reducing stress, improving sleep, soothing pain perception, and increasing their ability to take proactive charge of their health.
Scientific and safety note
The content of this article is the personal reflection of a student after the course. Results may vary depending on the individual, cause of pain, severity of injury, medical history, responsiveness to the method, stress level, and post-course practice consistency.
Methods such as hypnotherapy, self-hypnosis, EFT, deep relaxation, and emotion regulation should be understood as tools to support mind-body health. They do not replace medical examination, diagnostic imaging, medication, physical therapy, surgery, emergency care, or specialized medical treatment when necessary.
People with herniated discs, spinal pain, pain radiating to the legs, numbness or weakness in the limbs, saddle anesthesia, bowel or bladder dysfunction, fever, unexplained weight loss, post-traumatic pain, or rapidly increasing pain should seek timely specialist medical evaluation.
